Easy Summer Party Ideas

Summers are all about partying! Why not bring the party outdoors? Read on for ideas on how to decorate an outdoor summer party.

  • Set the scene regardless of the size of your outdoor space - by using table linens, paper lanterns, ribbons and fresh flowers. Cushions and pillows on chairs can invite guests to sit and relax.

  • This one's a no-brainer.  If you don't own any patio furniture or have very little, bring your indoor furniture outdoors. (weather permitting, of course.) You can use a dresser for a cake table, dining room chairs for extra seating, dining room table for guests to eat, and pillows and throws from around the house in the palette you've chosen and glassware and utensils from your kitchen cabinets.

  • It's easy to go overboard with colors but if you follow a simple rule: Choose three main colors and incorporate them through out the decor in napkins, plates, lanterns, cookies, and any other party accessories.

  • Create areas for your guests to gather. Decide on what you'd like the guests to do - is it a dinner party? Will they be sitting around a table or will you have just appetizers where guests would be doing more lounging than formal sitting? Make sure you have enough spaces for people to sit. It's not okay for people to be standing around because they have no place to sit down and enjoy your party - especially outdoors with the sun on them. Trust me, they will leave!  If you don't have enough sitting, encourage guests to B.Y.O.C. (Bring your own chairs.)

  • Make sure cakes, cookies and anything food related is covered and free from bugs! The last thing you want is for your guest to find a creepy crawler in their cake. Use cake plates with dome covers, marquees to cover up the cake area and keep them free from sun exposure and plates for desserts that have covers.

  • Make sure you have plenty of lighting. Same rules apply to when you're just decorating for everyday. (See post on Decor For Outdoor Spaces )
Other important tips:
  • Make sure you have bug repellent candles and bug repellent anything you can find for outdoor use. Guests once again will leave if they are being bit or are uncomfortable.

Easy Decor for Outdoor Spaces

summer outdoors backyard design

Liven up your backyard and patio buy buying some new outdoor furniture. It doesn't have to be expensive but it is the first step to sprucing up your personal outdoor haven.

  • A color palette of earthy browns and vibrant colors in greens, yellows and reds connect interior spaces to exterior spaces - thus creating an expanded living space. Selective use of outdoor fabrics in bold patterns and colors provide a perfect pop of color against a neutral backdrop, creating a vibrant yet tranquil setting.

  • Outdoor tents add a touch of sophistication and an instant sense of peace. Pair these with outdoor soft cushioned furniture for even more tranquility.
  • If you have small children and a large outdoor area, why not invest in a couple of picnic tables? Kids love these. You can set up their own section of the backyard and include some park benches so they can sit and relax and enjoy their time outdoors.

  • Light up your outdoor space with candles, under tent lighting and table chandeliers. As the night wears on, it can have an extreme calming effect.

By adding beautiful paintings, a neutral backdrop, colorful details and great lighting, you are well on your way to a nicely decorated outdoors!

I love Summer... and I love Summer Home Decor! Here are some easy peasy summer decor tips everyone should do!

Rethink your home decor and get inspired by the bright, sunny colors of summer. Designing for summer is simple - the use of natural elements is what will make this decor easy both for indoors and outdoors. (We will touch on outdoor decor on the next blog post.)

Choose from a tropical design filled with lots of vivid colors or a coastal/nautical design that incorporates beach-themed items like seashells, sand and starfish.

  • Add tropical punches with throw pillows in bright colors.
  • Use bright colors like bright orange, sunshiny yellow and aqua blues in your home to spice up the dark colors from your winter decor. (Read more about how to design with brights.)
  • Buy a small outdoor bench and bring it in the home. Decorate with lots of pillows and bright throws to bring the look together.
  • Change your area rug to one with an outdoor feel, flowers or palm trees work best.

  • Fill vases with sand, seashells and anything from the sea. Collect it from your actual beach or buy it from stores like Michaels or Joann's.
  • Hang decorative signs that remind you of beach and summer days.
  • Keep fresh white flowers - poppies or your choice of flowers and change them out every week to bring the smell of the outdoors in.
  • Try eco-friendly materials like bamboo and hemp for a more rustic coastal feel.

Tips:

  • Incorporate vacation finds into the overall decor pieces
  • Switch out your coffee table for a few ottomans in different vivid colors
  • Add a sun inspired wall art or mirror to the entryway or foyer of your home.
  • Bring the outdoors in. Bring your favorite piece of outdoor furniture indoors. I would suggest a small side table.
  • Buy some summer scents. Bath and Body have an array of summer scents. Some of them really smell like the beach. (See picture below!)
  • Accessorize, Accessorize, Accesorize! ..With seasonal design, most of your decor will come from small items, like pillows, clocks, throws and small pieces of furniture like ottomans and side tables.
  • Most importantly, smile when you come in the door..it's SUMMER....!!!!
Summer decor is all about finding the right balance between enjoyment, relaxing, and livable interiors. Try these tips for your home and see if you don’t instantly feel like taking the day off to enjoy your summer home.
